His practice is concerned with how colonial frameworks like archives, chronologies and hierarchies shape our understanding of time, history, and nativeness. His work explores how categorisation in archives become mechanisms of power, particularly through the processes of preserving and constructing an archive, and through the narrative forms of books. Artistic research, artists' books, imagery and sound art are central to his practice. He researches the relationship between a book's material form and its narrative structure, and actively re-employs these dynamics in his own work. To him, the book form is a democratic and artistic medium, which gives form to the ideas emerging from his artistic research. He has been publishing limited editions of these artists' books that are presented in both exhibition settings and at art book fairs such as in Berlin, Hong Kong, Düsseldorf, Cologne and elsewhere. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Art The Hague (MA Artistic Research) and Hong Kong Baptist University (BA Visual Arts), Hsu serves as art director at mmmmor studio, where he continues to promote artist books and independent publishing. Time serves here as the bridge between past and present. In the vast archive of the German Clock Museum (Deutsches Uhrenmuseum) in Furtwangen, a city located in the Black Forest, hundreds of timepieces stand silent. In the museum and its archives, the clocks all froze at different moments. For instance, one clock stopped at 8:10, another at 4:00. This work responds to these specific times, using them as cues. During a trip in June, in the longest days of the year, I captured photographs and made observations at the exact times shown on the museum's clocks, creating a temporal link between the historical artifacts and our contemporary experience. Time, in terms of the system of a clock, has been mutually understandable between the past, since the early 14th century when the mechanical clock was invented, and the present.This conjunction is at the same time temporary and eternal, just as the essence of time itself–paradoxical. Museums, as a history and time keeper, essentially preserve time itself–revoking the spectre of the past, and retaining the present of the past for the future. colonialism in the early 20th century. Photography did not simply document Indigenous life, it actively shaped how Native peoples were seen, remembered, and ultimately erased.The most extensive ethnographic photographic project of that period in America was Edward S. Curtis’s The North American Indian (1907–1930), which produced over 40,000 photographs for more than 80 Nations. By staging Native people within romanticized conventions, Curtis’s images framed disappearance as natural rather than as the result of deliberate government policies. His images were made from 1900 to 1930, an era of systematic cultural destruction and land dispossession in Native American history. Drawing from archival materials, including Curtis’s text index and E.W. Gifford’s anthropological studies of Yavapai peoples, this work examines how ethnographic projects categorized and studied human beings as objects.In response, I carved found stones from my research travels into anonymous faces. These faces without explicit identity counter Curtis's images, which fixed a narrow impression of Native peoples that persists despite being far from the whole truth. Preserved from demolished historical buildings in Taiwan, these ornamental fragments were once integral to traditional house decorations. We seek shade in the desert, as if searching for protection in a world where survival depends on shelter. Much like young saguaros growing beneath nurse trees, we find refuge from sunburn and frost under an older tree.This act of seeking shade echoes impermanence: the nurse tree quietly shelters the young saguaro, but as the saguaro grows, it draws more water and resources, sometimes leading to the death of the older tree.These photos are the accumulation of the experiences and impressions I gathered over two months in the Sonoran Desert, Arizona. Some moments appear in images, others don’t.Seeking shade in the desert, seeking shade in history: seeking the forgotten memories and underexposed narratives that haunt this landscape. These shades remind us that the past/history is not absent but obscured. The work unpacks silent narratives embedded within materials, revealing histories beyond written documentation. The installation centres on thin wooden plates from aging roofs across Taiwan's historical homes. The wooden plates become both medium and message through my woodcut prints. The prints were made by focusing on and re-tracing small portions of Dutch colonial-era drawings. A sculptural wooden structure, echoing the form of a traditional roof, houses these printed plates.“Flee ye into another” is Jesus's instruction from Matthew 10:23 telling his disciples to escape to the next town when persecuted.Sirayan initially had no writing system. During Dutch colonization (1624-1662), missionaries introduced a Latin alphabet writing system for Sirayan, creating the Sinckan Manuscripts. These documents primarily recorded land and financial contracts.By 1873, scholars were unable to find anyone who could speak Sirayan in southern Taiwan. The Dutch missionaries' translation of the Bible into Sirayan 400 years ago was intended as a means of spreading faith, but unintentionally became a way to preserve this now-extinct language. Today, we can only use these records in Latin letters and Chinese characters to work out the original pronunciation and meaning of this language. It captures the fragility of their relations. In this exhibition, the ocean serves as a metaphor. This exhibition stands as a point in time, much like on an unstable ship in the middle of a vast sea. On this ship, we gaze at the distant island—Taiwan's past. History itself resembles an island - elusive and far-off.&nbsp; Our sight of this island, much like the sea that separates us from it, is often unsteady. As our eyes scan the horizon of years of Taiwan's history, we encounter a sea of accounts predominantly written by colonizers - the Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese. Taiwan's indigenous groups, without written scripts or historical writing traditions, relied on oral traditions to preserve their memory and past. These sounds, however, have largely been lost to time, leaving gaps in our understanding. As if without written characters, there would be no history. In the early 18th century England, George Psalmanazar, a European author “became” the first Taiwanese indigenous people to write their own history. He fabricated his identity, a Formosan language and history through writing. The possession of a written language and the ability to record or create events, ideas, and knowledge is inherently a form of power. Anthropologist Eric Wolf's "Europe and the People Without History" argues against the Eurocentric view that societies without writing are ahistorical.&nbsp; In the context of southern Taiwan and indigenous Siraya, where 400 years ago Dutch rule marked the first European colonization in Taiwan/Formosa, we re-examine Eurocentric and Han-centric historical narratives, particularly focusing on the forms of expression in these historical traditions—writing. We pose the question: without writing, do we have history? Through ocean, Chinese characters, contracts between colonisers and the colonised, and records from the Dutch to Japanese colonial periods, the exhibition aims to investigate the essence of written characters and language. Under the title ‘from ab to zu’, the exhibition traces a path through time—from the past to the present; and through space—from departure to destination. In their debut exhibition in Germany, the Hong Kong-born artists duo Lai Ping So and Wai Lun Hsu, examines the history of time, as well as notions of power centralisation and hierarchy, through material and digital archives from Germany and East Asia. Through their field research along the Rhine river, the artists explore sensory intersection between sound, sight, and touch, inquiring whether visual and tactile compositions can trigger auditory memories. The exhibition features an immersive presentation of artists’ books, prints, and paper-based works from the artists. From one moment to another, from one point to another, from pages to books, ‘from ab to zu’ weaves together these constellations of moments. Edward S. Curtis's The North American Indian (1907–1930) produced over 40,000 photographs across more than 80 Nations, staging romanticized images that presented Indigenous disappearance as natural rather than the result of deliberate policies during an era of systematic cultural destruction. This work examines how ethnographic projects categorized and studied human beings as objects. It includes stones carved into faces without explicit identity. The scorching sun shines indifferently. We seek shade in the desert, as if searching for protection in a world where survival depends on shelter. Much like young saguaros growing beneath nurse trees, we find refuge from sunburn and frost under an older tree. This act of seeking shade echoes impermanence: the nurse tree quietly shelters the young saguaro, but as the saguaro grows, it draws more water and resources, sometimes leading to the death of the older tree. These photos are the accumulation of the experiences and impressions I gathered over two months in the Sonoran Desert, Arizona. Some moments appear in images, others don’t. Seeking shade in the desert, seeking shade in history: seeking the forgotten memories and underexposed narratives that haunt this landscape. These shades remind us that the past/history is not absent but obscured. By re-examining historical texts and images, these traditional forms of historical representation, we question: Can history exist without script characters? Taiwan's indigenous peoples primarily preserved their histories through oral traditions, vital for maintaining their historical knowledge. However, when attempting to investigate Taiwan's past, we encountered an obstacle: there are no direct written records from indigenous societies themselves. Instead, the available written documentation comes primarily from colonial-era European, Chinese, and Japanese sources. This work comprises three books, each containing hundreds of pages compiled from textual and visual fragments of Taiwan's early history. These books can be seen as fragments of archives, highlighting the incompleteness of history. Audiences are invited to tear off one page from the books with the knife sculptures and take away a small part of history with them. Three knife sculptures shaped after the Qing dynasty's “aboriginal boundary” (1750-1790), the policy that segregated Han settlers from indigenous Taiwanese. These knives physically tear book pages, leaving imprints of the border line onto the paper. Wolf在其著作《歐洲與沒有歷史的民族》中挑戰了歐洲中心主義的歷史敘事—將沒有文字記錄的社會視為無歷史的。藉著重新審視歷史的文本和圖像，這些傳統的歷史表現形式，我們提出疑問：沒有文字符號，歷史能否存在？ 台灣原住民主要通過口述傳統保存他們的歷史和關於過去的知識。所以當我們試圖調查台灣的過去時，遇到了一個障礙：沒有來自原住民群體本身的直接書面記錄。相反，可閱讀的書面文獻主要來自殖民時期的歐洲、中國和日本來源，都是他者的書寫。 這件作品由三本書組成，每本書包含數百頁從台灣早期歷史的文本和視覺片段編排而成。這些書可視為檔案的斷片，突出了歷史的不完整性。 觀眾可以用刀型雕塑從這幾本書中撕下一頁，帶走一小部分歷史。 書上面有三個刀雕塑，其形狀模仿清朝的「番界」（1750-1790），當年將漢族移民與台灣原住民分隔開來的政策。觀眾利用這些邊界撕開書頁，在紙上留下邊界線的印記。
