The Bell of New Year's Eve · Wartime Hong Kong
2026, artist’s book, newspaper, artistic research

On the last night of 1941, the sound of Hong Kong came through radios across Japan.
Six days after Japanese forces occupied Hong Kong, NHK broadcast a recording of the cannon fire from the assault to audiences nationwide. It replaced the Joya no Kane: Japan's end-of-year ritual in which temple bells are struck by hand, 108 times, to dispel the one hundred and eight afflictions of Buddhist tradition.
This book begins with the fragility of the historical record: how do you prove something happened 85 years ago? The work traces this forgotten, marginalised fragment of history across scattered archives in Japan and Hong Kong, following a broadcast sound so thinly documented that even NHK could not confirm the incident. That thinness of record finds a local echo in Hong Kong itself, where wartime archives are virtually non-existent within the city's own collections.
The publication also situates this single broadcast within a longer genealogy of acoustic violence, from music torture at Guantánamo to the loudspeakers broadcasting K-pop across the Korean border, tracing how modern recording and amplification technology turned a sound that once merely signalled danger into an instrument that can be copied, aimed, and forced upon a listener with no way to refuse it.
